Eating a Rainbow

Last night I was watching a movie with my family.  It was a very rainy afternoon and it was getting close to sunset.  So we were all snuggled on the sofa under blankets. 

Out the window we saw the most beautiful rainbow.  We could see the whole rainbow too.  Having just learned more about rainbows and leprechauns, my kindergartener said, "Mama, that's where the golden pot is, right at the bottom of the rainbow!"  She's right! 


Well, I'm going to twist that just a little bit.  Think of our bodies as a golden pot.  When we eat right, we can fill our pots with gold.  We feel good.  We sleep better.  We are happier and healthier. 

In order to fill our pots with gold, we must eat the colors of the rainbow.  Have you ever noticed eating a meal that's all yellow or orange?  Macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, applesauce...  Not a very well rounded meal.

So let's talk about colors to eat and what would be an easy food to eat at dinner in rainbow colors.
RED:   tomatoes come first to my mind.  Throw a bunch of juicy red tomatoes into the dinner salad.  What about pomegranates or strawberries?  These make a great addition to a salad. 

ORANGE:  Saturday we picked up some fresh oranges and tangelos from a local farmer's market.  Full of vitamin C, we often slice up an orange or two as a side dish for dinner.  We also picked up some carrots from this same farmer.  He had orange, yellow and purple carrots.  Add sliced or grated carrots to your salad.

YELLOW:  Bananas are filled with potassium.  So healthy.  But what about some steamed yellow squash with dinner?  They would be my choice over bananas. 

GREEN:  This one's easy.  Leafy green salad filled with spinach, romaine, and other types of lettuce.  The more color your lettuce has, the better for you.  I add 10 or so leaves of baby spinach to my morning smoothie every day.  Doesn't change the flavor, just adds nutrients.  Our other favorites in the shade of green are steamed broccoli, steamed peas or even steamed green beans.  Flavor them with herbs rather than salt and butter. 

BLUE:  Blueberries pop into my mind first.  Toss some frozen blueberries into your green salad.  The kids will LOVE it!  What else is blue?  Blue cheese? 

PURPLE:  Have you ever had purple potatoes?  They taste just the same.  So bake some up for a yummy side dish.  Other purple options are eggplant, purple carrots, blackberries, plums, raisins. 

So have fun with this.  Get the kids involved.  Try to eat the rainbow every day.  Your body will thank you and your pot of gold will be overflowing.

In my opinion there's nothing worse than looking for a job.

There's that feeling of desperation that interviewers can smell, like a wolf can smell fear.  There's the endless searching through ads on the internet and in the newspaper.  It's just NO FUN.

NEW Facebook Fan Page Timeline

Do you like the new Facebook Timeline?  It seems to be black and white - either people LOVE it or they HATE it. 

I love it.  The visual aspect of it is awesome.

Promote Your Business with Creativity

Jewelry is a fun way to promote your business.

A few years ago I met Don Failla, who wrote The 45 Second Presentation That Will Change Your Life Don was wearing a pin on his lapel and it was upside down - on purpose.  He said that when standing in line at the store, or out and about, people would try to fix his pin for him or they would tell him it was upside down.  This was Don's way of starting a conversation about his business.  Smart, right?

You may know that my business is to make jewelry out of used Scrabble tiles.



Well, I decided to make some jewelry to promote my business.  They're not upside down...but they're cute!  They are definitely great conversation starters.

Local Networking Groups

One way to build your business is by telling your friends and family about what you do. But what happens when they all know about your business?

You need to find new prospects and meet new people.  Joining local networking groups is an excellent source of new friends.



Recently I have joined the Friends in Business Networking Group.  This group even has a nice video blog.  They make a little video of us where can introduce ourselves and our business.

It was loud in the restaurant, but it came out OK...

The great thing about the video is that it's linked to all the chapters of this particular group.  So not only do the members I see weekly have access to these videos, others in the area do too.

The secret to attending networking groups is consistency.  You need to attend regularly so you get to know the members.  People do business with those they KNOW, LIKE and TRUST.  By consistently going to the meetings, people get to KNOW you, LIKE you, and TRUST you.  They may not use your services, but may refer you to others.

 
The second secret to networking groups is to set up one-on-ones with those you meet.  Talk to them about their business.  Meet with them to learn about them and their needs.  Then you can also share your business with them.  Getting to know one another is the best way to build these business relationships.

Have fun going to networking meetings.  Meet new friends and build new relationships.

100 ViSalus Shake Recipes


Are you on the Body By Vi 90 Day Challenge?  Tired of the same old shake everyday?



Now you can MIX it UP! Below is a list of 100 recipes you can make with the ViSalus Shake.  These are meant to be meal replacements and are super tasty.  Some of these recipes are my personal favorites and some I have gathered from various places on the internet.  Thought I'd post them here, all together, for you to see, try, and share.

You may use any type of milk you like.  Personally, I use unsweetened Almond milk.  

Also, each recipe calls for ice cubes.  Ice is totally optional.

ViSalus Shake Recipes


After Glow Smoothie: 4 oz. (1/2 cup) pomegranate juice, 4 oz. (1/2 cup orange juice), 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 cup frozen pineapple & 5 ice cubes.  Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

All Berry Delight: 8 oz. skim milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/4 cup frozen raspberries, 1/4 cup frozen blackberries, 1/4 cup frozen strawberries, 1/4 cup frozen dark cherries & 4 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Almond Joy: 8 oz. Silk Pure Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/2 tsp coconut extract, 1 chocolate flavor packet (or 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder) & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Amaretto: 8 oz. Silk Pure Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape Vi-Shake mix, 1 cup frozen dark sweet cherries & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

Ambrosia: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/2 tsp. coconut extract, 1/4 cup pear slices, 1/4 apple slices, 1/4 cup frozen strawberries, 1/4 cup frozen pineapple chunks, 1 peach flavor packet & 3 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Angel Food Cake: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape Body By Vi Shake mix, 1/2 tsp. coconut extract, 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract & 3 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Apple Cider Smoothie: 6 oz. unsweetened apple juice (or cider), 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 orange flavor packet, 2 tsp. cinnamon, 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


Apple Mango Freeze: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 3 Tbsp. unsweetened apple sauce, 1 cup frozen mango chunks & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


 

Apple Pie: 8 oz. Almond milk or Vanilla Soy milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 3 Tbsp. unsweetened applesauce, dash of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract & 6 ice cubes.Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

Banana Coconut Breeze: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/2 small frozen banana, 1 banana flavor packet, 1/2 tsp. coconut extract, & 4 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

Banana Cream: 8 oz. water, 3/4 cup vanilla low fat yogurt, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 small banana, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


Banana Kiwi Cooler: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/2 small frozen banana, 1 banana flavor packet, 1/2 cup fresh kiwi slices (peeled), & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

Banana Nut Bread: 8 oz. Silk Pure Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 tsp. butter extract flavoring, 1 banana flavor packet, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


Banana Rama: 8 oz. Skim or Soy milk, 1/2 med banana, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, optional: ice. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

Banana Spice: 8 oz. Silk Light Vanilla Soy Milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 small frozen banana, 2 Tbsp. ground flax seeds, pinch of cinnamon, pinch of nutmeg & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


Banana Split: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 small banana, 1 Chocolate flavor packet, 1 Tbsp. reduced fat peanut butter, & 4 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


 

Berry Blast: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/2 cup frozen blackberries, 1/2 cup frozen strawberries & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


Berry Peachy: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/2 cup frozen peach slices, 1/2 cup frozen strawberries, 1 peach flavor packet & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


Berries & Cream: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/2 cup frozen raspberries, 1/2 cup frozen strawberries, 1 strawberry flavor packet, 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


Birthday Cake: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops of Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 chocolate flavor packet, 1/2 tsp. butter flavoring (or butter buds), 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


Blackberry Apple Slush: 6 oz. unsweetened apple juice, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 30 frozen blackberries & 7 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


Blackberry Freeze: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 30 frozen blackberries & 4 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Blended Coffee: 8 oz. (1 cup) coffee-instant, regular, prepared with water, 1 1/2 cup skim milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 chocolate flavor packet & 4 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Butterscotch Mousse: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 2 Tbsp. sugar free butterscotch pudding mix & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.



Cafe Latte: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 tsp. dry instant coffee powder & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


Candy Cane: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/2 cup frozen strawberries, 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract, 1 strawberry flavor pack & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

Caramello: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 2 tsp. sugar free caramel flavoring & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

Cherry Almond Chill: 8 oz. Silk Pure Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 cup frozen dark sweet cherries & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 


Cherry Banana Breeze: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 cup frozen dark sweet cherries, 1 banana flavor packet & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

Cherry Cheesecake: 6 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 cup frozen dark unsweetened cherries, 2 oz. fat-free cream cheese, 2 dashes ground cinnamon & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

Cherry Lemonade: 6 oz. crystal light lemonade, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 cup frozen dark sweet cherries & 8 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

Cherry Orange Delight: 4 oz. orange juice, 4 oz. water, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 cup frozen dark sweet cherries & 8 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

 

Cherry Pineapple Slush: 6 oz. water, 2 oz. pineapple juice drained from can, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/2 cup pineapple, 1/2 cup frozen cherries & 8 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 



Cherry Limeade: 8 oz. vanilla soy milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 Tbsp. frozen limeade concentrate, 4 maraschino cherries & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. 

Cherry Pineapple Chill: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/2 cup frozen dark sweet cherries, 1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks, & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


Cherry Spice: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 cup frozen dark sweet cherries, 2 tsp. cinnamon & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


Chocolate Almond Delight: 12 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 15 raw almonds, 1/2 tsp. coconut extract, 1 chocolate flavor packet (or 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder), & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


Chocolate Cheesecake: 6 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 chocolate flavor packet (or 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder), 2 oz. fat-free cream cheese & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


Chocolate Covered Cherries: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 10 frozen dark sweet cherries, 1 chocolate flavor packet (or 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder), & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 5 frozen strawberries, 1 chocolate flavor packet (or 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder), & 4 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 Tbsp. reduced fat peanut butter, 1 chocolate flavor packet (or 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder), & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


Chocolate Peppermint: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract, 2 chocolate flavor packets (or 2 Tbsp. cocoa powder), & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup. For a hot chocolate treat, heat in microwave.

Chocolate Razzleberry: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1/3 cup frozen raspberries, 1 chocolate flavor packet (or 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder), & 4 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


Cinnaberry: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 5 frozen strawberries, 1 strawberry flavor packet, 3 tsp. cinnamon & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


Cinnamon Almond Cream: 8 oz. Silk Pure Almond milk, 2 scoops of Vi-Shape shake mix, 3 tsp. cinnamon & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Cinnamon Bun: 8 oz. vanilla soy milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 2 Tbsp. cinnamon, 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract, 1 tsp. butter buds (or butter flavoring) & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Citrus Berry: 4 oz. Almond milk, 4 oz. orange juice, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 strawberry flavor packet, 1/2 cup frozen strawberries, 1 tsp. lemon juice & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


Citrus Delight: 4 oz. water, 2 oz. orange juice, 2 oz. grapefruit juice, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 orange flavor packet, 1 tsp. lemon juice & 7 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Citrus Spice: 6 oz. orange juice, 2 oz. water, 2 scoops of Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 Tbsp. lemon juice , 3 tsp. cinnamon & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

 
Citrus Splash: 6 oz. sprite zero or diet sprite, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 1 orange flavor packet, 1/2 Tbsp. lemon juice, 1/2 Tbsp. lime juice, & 7 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


Coco Mango: 8 oz. Almond milk, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 6 chunks frozen mango (1 cup), 1/2 tsp. coconut extract & 5 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.


Coconut Lime Spritzer: 6 oz. sprite zero or diet sprite, 2 scoops Vi-Shape shake mix, 2 Tbsp. lime juice, 1/2 tsp. coconut extract & 7 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Cranberry Crush: 8 oz. (1 cup) cranberry juice (no sugar added), 2 scoops of Vi-Shape shake mix, 4 frozen strawberries, 2 Tbsp. plain nonfat yogurt & 6 ice cubes. Mix well in a blender or a shaker cup.

Welcome to March - National Nutrition Month

It's March and it's National Nutrition Month!  

According to eatingright.org, "National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly the American Dietetic Association. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits."


You know how when you are growing up, you think that the way you and your family do things is the way EVERYONE does things.  Then you get to high school and go off to college and realize that your family is weird. 


That's what happened to me.  I thought that everyone ate as healthy as my family.  I thought everyone made their own bread, yogurt and grew their own sprouts as a kid. 


Didn't your family do that?  Was your special dinner out with mom to the health food store to get a Tiger's Milk bar and some keifer?  Oh, am I the only one who did that?  Yes, I think my first fast food visit was when my dad came to visit me and took me to Carl's Jr.  I'm sure he was unsure of his daughter when she struggled to eat a hamburger.


The rest of the country wasn't raised like me? I guess I was starting to realize that when I took my lunch to school and compared it with the lunches of my friends.  My bread was brown and homemade.  Their bread was white and pillow soft.  They had fun cream filled yellow cakes in plastic.  I had a cookie bar made with oats, honey, molasses, and carab. 


I guess this is why we need a National Nutrition Month.  I feel very fortunate to have learned healthy eating habits as a child.  Not everyone had this education as a child. 




Then we have the food manufacturers messing everything up with processed foods filled with chemicals and additives.  Then the fast food people made French fries and ketchup taste so good.  They made it so easy for us to get food by just driving through and picking up our food without even getting out of our car to walk (exercise) into the restaurant.


This is why I've been attracted to health and wellness businesses my whole adult life.  To help educate people on how to be healthy and why they should care.  We as adults need to be educated on how to live a healthy lifestyle so we can teach our children.  Then they'll be healthy and teach their children.  What better legacy can you leave your family?
